Webbla 1.4, introducing the Tag Stripe

What’ s new in Webbla 1.4 ?

We did some GUI modifications to come closer to our next bigger release.

We removed the tag cloud on the left to get more spacefor collections and created a “Tag Stripe”, sitting on the right of the Grid/List view.

You can use the Tag Stripe like you have used Tag Cloud before. When you click a Tag, the bookmarks will be filtered.
You can now include or exclude ( hold command and click) Tags while filtering. The selected tags are shown on the bottom of the window.
If you click on a selected Tag you remove it from the selection or you can click on the orange button on the right to remove all at once.

If all your tags don’t find place on the screen, you can move the Tag Stripe up and down by moving with the mouse to the upper or lower edge.

ize adjustment and other options to customize the Tag Stripe are available in the preference panel.

Tags can also be dragged on the Tag field of the bookmark selection to add the tag.

You can create a Tag Collection which is a new kind of collection with additional functionality by pressing on the + in the left corner to open the collection menu
and select “New Tag Collection”.

If you drag bookmarks on a Tag collections the bookmarks will be automatically tagged with the corresponding tags.

Webbla also offers now a new preview panel which replace the preview placed on the top of the list and grid view.

This is all for now, but stay tuned until we are ready with our next bigger release which will offer more connectivity.

  1. Honestly, after a few weeks of using the stripe I must admit the cloud was way better, more convenient than the new setting. I’ll give you one example: I usually place Webbla on the left of the screen to have instantanious access to it while browsing the web (in short web browser has never ovelapped the left space of Webbla.app window) In this way I had a quick access to folders, smart folders, and tag-cloud. Now I have to battle against browser and Webla windows in order to find a link. Could you at least give me an option to choose between the two settings? (i.e. the cloud and the stripe)
And one more thing… The second battle I fight is when trying to find a tag which is needed, hidden either on top or on the bottom of the stripe. Bad move in my opinion.

  2. Thanks for the feedback.

Normally the new tag stripe should make tag selection more easy, specially for user with many tags. We never had scroller on the old tag cloud as it seemed for us to difficult to use (first to scroll and then to click).
We got a lot of positive feedback from user after we have replaced the tag cloud with the tag stripe but we also care on user who are not happy with this change.

It’s our first version with the tag stripe and we think that we are able to make it usable for all our user with some improvements like:

    – enabling scrolling with the trackpad and trackball (up and down)
    – if the mouse is located over the tag stripe and you hit a key the tag stripe will scroll to the word which begin with the key you have pressed.
    – show only the most important tags or let the user decide which tags he would like to see in the tag stripe (exclude tags)
    – an option to place the tag stripe on the left or right.

We would really like to improve the tag stripe that all our existing user like to use it.

Some of the features above will be implemented in a small update which we have planned to release in the next days.

  3. I haven’t used the new version for long enough to come to a definite verdict, but my first feeling is that I really like the tag strip. Even if it eventually turns out that it’s not workable long term in its present form, I applaud your innovative approach: it would be tragedy if tag clouds become the norm just because they came out earlier and look nice, and people can’t conceive of alternatives.

By the way, anything happening with OpenMeta?

  4. Спасибо за сообщение, весьма интересно. Я согласен с предыдущим комментарием.
