Why a Bookmark Manager for Mac OS X ?

Maybe some people who visit our website may ask why we have written a bookmark manager for Mac OS X and not a more innovative, really cool app for the Mac.

Yes,it’s a good question and we would like to answer it.

Myself, I have never used a bookmark manager, I did not even save bookmarks in the web browsers bookmarks database. The Websites I like to visit I know by heart and if I am looking for some new, Google bring me to the site where I can find the information I am looking for. When I find a really interesting website I want to keep, I drag the url on the desktop for later use, not more.

But why to write a bookmark manager application if I have never used one at my own ?

When we have decided 2007 to settle down in Mauritius ( we are from good (c)old  Germany ) and we have planned to set up Celmaro we needed to get an overview on the Mac software market, software development, and to know if it is possible to live from.

Mauritius

We needed a simple project to learn about the whole process of developing an application starting from the idea to a finished product which include also update and registration capabilities.

So what is simpler as a bookmark manager, you need only two fields, name and url and if you make it some better you add a note field and allow tagging, that’s it.

But this would not have satisfied us at all. We don’t like to copy existing products and this would not have helped us to get an idea if we will get some income by selling software.

The need to research the web for existing software companies to get inspired from their websites brought us to the idea to start with Webbla.

The outline application we have used to collect the websites which inspired us in whole or part was too confusing, to find back a website too difficult.

What we needed was a tool to keep phenomenal websites, add some  comments, organize them and find them back by looking on the thumbnails.

Webbla was born.

Even that we have subtitle Webbla as a visual bookmark manager the main idea was to capture and organize information in context with websites.

Webbla helped us a lot to understand developing applications on Mac OS X and the business of software. We have passed exiting moments when we have released our first versions and when we have read what other people think on our product in the web or in magazines.

Moments we would not like to miss.

Future applications will be more close to our daily work. Our next application we have planned to release in some days will be a time tracking software that we are internally using since long to track the time we spend on different tasks.

  1. Ach, ich würd auch gerne auf Mauritius setteln. 🙂
Bin via TUAW auf euch gestoßen und finde es toll, dass es deutsche Programmierer bis nach Mauritius verschlägt!

  2. Gerade gekauft 😉 just bought.
Happy to support. I track exclusively Wikipedia Bookmarks about Music Artists and Webbla keeps me updatet and organized. Nice.
